Joking aside, what Trump was doing is called Performative Loyalty Test/Preference Falsification. It is something that dictators do.
*-Saddam Hussein’s 1979 Ba’ath Party Purge*
*-Joseph Stalin’s Show Trials during The Great Purge*
*-Mao Zedong’s “Struggle Sessions” during the Great Revolution*
*-Fidel Castro’s many “Hand Votes” that weeded out the “worms” in the political realm*
*-Hugo Chávez would ask the audience to raise their hand if they believed certain enemy factions were traitors while on his show “Alo Presidente.”*
It’s the demagoguery of Trump’s false patriotism and us-versus-them tactics that keep his base in line.
Also fear of reprisal and punishment.

It’s been a while since I last copied, pasted and shared the following four paragraphs, and so I figure maybe it’s about time I did so once again:
You know how it’s a cliche when a serial killer is caught that their neighbours are shocked and swear blind the killer / their former neighbour always came across like a well meaning, reserved, totally normal and upstanding member of the community? To me, Stephen Miller comes across as the total opposite: the rude and creepy neighbour who never quite felt right in a neighbourhood with an unusual number of missing pets.
For there is a quality to Miller’s eyes that genuinely unsettles me. They’re similar to Matt Walsh’s eyes: somewhat consistently bland, unchanging, non-expressive, and yet always also somehow contemptuous. Even on those rare occasions when he attempts to smile they stay the same. It’s like he’s beyond even feeling passionate hatred, that his eyes can’t help but give away that he is stuck in a permanent baseline lethargic state of arrogant disgust and superior exasperation towards everyone, everything, and even Life itself. It’s as though at any moment he could easily pick up and jam a pencil into someone’s temple and yet do so impassively, nonchalantly, matter-of-factly, without any visible sign of any emotion whatsoever (no anger, pleasure, etc), and that throughout his attack his eyes would stay the same as always, barely even blinking as he watches the life drain out of his victim with the same bored detachment as someone absentmindedly staring at the glass door of a washing machine and the wet clothes spinning around inside.
” *… Sometimes that shark, he looks right into you. Right into your eyes. You know the thing about a shark, he’s got…lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll’s eye. When he comes at ya, doesn’t seem to be livin’. Until he bites ya and those black eyes roll over white. And then, ah then you hear that terrible high pitch screamin’ and the ocean turns red and spite of all the poundin’ and the hollerin’ they all come in and rip you to pieces*.”

Oh fuck off dollar store Voldemort.
Republicans are desperately trying to spin Trump’s political stunt during the SOTU into some kind of profound revelation, but there was nothing sincere or meaningful about his obvious provocation.
Trump’s entire speech was a humiliating performance, a political charade.
Republicans don’t care about the American people. They’re only trying to turn this one moment into a marketable narrative for their uneducated base.
No one with any sense or self respect is going to “stand up” when a deranged and petty narcissist is taunting them into playing his childish games.
Even if Democrats stood, Republicans still would have made it into a spectacle, a political selling point.
Trump went on the offensive instead of genuinely and thoughtfully discussing how he’s going to address the immediate problems impacting Americans.
Trump chose anger and hostility, blame games and insults over earnest communication.
When he wasn’t name-calling, or fearmongering, or being intentionally uncivil, he was talking out of his ass; reciting empty platitudes, grandiose claims, FALSE promises and lies about his imaginary achievements.
He chose to address his groveling sycophants in the audience instead of addressing the American people.
And instead of acknowledging that Trump lied constantly throughout his whole derisive and baiting rant while he filled in the gaps with political puffery; or that he acted like a petulant school yard bully; politicized and demagogued every issue; jeered and mocked others; even used victims of violence and their families as political props and pawns—instead of acknowledging his shameless performance, the republican party would rather focus on a solitary “gotcha” moment that only played well for a small, naive MAGA audience.
Systemic economic issues are still getting worse and going unaddressed, wealth and income inequality is still MOUNTING, Trump’s tariffs are still taxing American businesses and consumers and hurting domestic industries, still alienating trade partners and failing to sufficiently reduce the trade deficit.
Healthcare costs and premiums are still rising, the Trump administration is still ignoring the effects of inflation, poor jobs figures, and economic slowdown, inequality and instability.
Trump and his family are monetizing his presidency to the tune of billions; profiting immensely from corrupt financial schemes and massive insider enrichment while most Americans are treading water.
Trump’s policies are stealing from the poor to give to the rich; serving the few at the expense of the many. And out of all the issues that Republicans could choose to draw the country’s attention to, they demand that Americans focus on this contrived political drama?
Instead of confronting our growing systemic problems and divide, Trump is putting on performances, promoting endless gimmicks and grifts, bragging about accomplishments that never materialized, and all the while insisting that we reject our lying eyes.
Trump’s DOJ has been covering up for rich and powerful criminals and child abusers with deep connections to Jeffrey Epstein.
The justice department is still withholding millions of Epstein documents, and Trump wants you to forget about this “hoax.” Hell, he didn’t bring up Epstein once throughout his whole tiring screed.
The government and military are occupying the streets of our cities and terrorizing the public, and Trump wants you to believe that this represents “law and order,” or that it’s “fixing” crime.
Trump is violating the constitution, abusing his executive powers, defying court orders, overstepping congressional authority and flouting checks and balances.
He is focused on pageantry and parades, on co-opting America’s 250 year anniversary, on personal vanity projects and on building grotesque monuments to himself while Americans continue to struggle financially.
Trump is pursuing foreign wars, escalating our global military presence, bombing a growing list of countries, threatening more military interventions overseas, orchestrating war crimes, attacking foreign nations for oil and waging war against his own people.
He’s alienating our allies and souring the Democratic world against us while cozying up with dictators, autocrats, and monarchs.
He’s upending global trade, weakening our alliances, escalating world wide tensions, causing massive economic uncertainty.
But the GOP’s CHIEF concern is how they can brand Democrats as “unAmerican” for refusing to stand up for an unhinged and pestering egomaniac.
